9. Festiwal Filmu i Sztuki Dwa Brzegi » News Homepage http://www.dwabrzegi.pl 1-9.08.2015 Fri, 18 Dec 2015 14:47:45 +0000 en-US hourly 1 http://wordpress.org/?v=3.9.2 Invitation to the 9th Two Riversides Film and Art Festival http://www.dwabrzegi.pl/en/invitation-to-the-9th-two-riversides-film-and-art-festival/ http://www.dwabrzegi.pl/en/invitation-to-the-9th-two-riversides-film-and-art-festival/#comments Sat, 01 Aug 2015 00:22:19 +0000 http://www.dwabrzegi.pl/?p=12389 Ladies and Gentlemen, Dear Friends – I have the great pleasure of inviting you to all of this year’s events.

In the “World Under Canvas” section we present the winners of the biggest European festivals, including Jacques Audiard’s “Dheepan” (Palme d’Or, Cannes 2015), Jafar Panahi’s “Taxi” (Golden Bear, Berlin 2015), Roy Andersson’ “A Pigeon Sat on a Branch Reflecting on Existence” (Golden Lion, Venice 2014), Andrew Haigh’s “45 Years” (Silver Bear for actors Charlotte Rampling and Toma Courtenay, Berlin 2015), and László Nemes’ “Son of Saul” (Grand Prix, Cannes 2015). We will also show films by those who have not received an award, although they should have, such as: Jaco Van Dormael with his “The Brand New Testament,” Pablo Larraín with “Club,” and Peter Greenaway with “Eisenstein in Guanajuato.”

The central characters of directors’ retrospectives are two very unconventional personalities in the world of film. Margarethe von Trotta, notable German director and screenwriter, believed to be one of the most prominent cinema art figures of the 20th century, will personally invite us to the Polish premiere of her newest film “Die Abhandene Welt” (“The Misplaced World”). We will also host Jerzy Skolimowski, the most internationally awarded Polish director. Six of his films have been selected for the Cannes main competition. In 1978 “The Shout” was awarded Grand Prix du Jury there, and it is with this film that we will open the retrospective of Skolimowski: an outstanding filmmaker, screenwriter, poet, painter, and visionary.

This year, the hero of the actor’s retrospective is Adam Woronowicz. His film and theatre roles, even the smallest of parts, are always memorable. An actor with an outstanding ability to transform. He can be credible both as the comical Mr. Józef from “The Reverse” and as the cold mob boss in “The Christening.” New Polish films, such as “Anatomy of Evil” by Jacek Bromski, “Walpurgis Night” by Marcin Bortkiewicz, and “The Red Spider” by Marcin Koszałka, will undoubtedly spark vivid discussions at Two Riversides.

Every evening you are invited to a musical event. We begin back at the Kazimierz Castle with a concert by Wojtek Mazolewski and his guests. Beautiful sunsets over the Vistula River give the concerts a special kind of power. It is also imperative that you visit Janowiec and Mięćmierz – the atmosphere there is just as unique.

I would like to thank all of our esteemed sponsors, partners, and the authorities of the Lublin Voivodeship, who have supported the Two Riversides Festival. I want to thank the entire team of wonderful people who join me in creating this festival with passion and joy year after year.

This year’s artistic program is very diverse. It shows how erratic and incoherent the world is today. It takes an imaginative, creative, intelligent, active, empathetic person to understand and harness this chaos. In numerology these people are defined by the number 9. So those who decide to participate in the 9th Film and Art Festival Two Riversides are heading in the right direction.

Join us!
Grażyna Torbicka
Artistic Director of the Film and Art Festival Two Riversides

Peter Greenway’s “Eisenstein in Guanajuato” – premiere and special guest http://www.dwabrzegi.pl/en/peter-greenways-eisenstein-in-guanajuato-premiere-and-special-guest/ http://www.dwabrzegi.pl/en/peter-greenways-eisenstein-in-guanajuato-premiere-and-special-guest/#comments Mon, 27 Jul 2015 12:15:26 +0000 http://www.dwabrzegi.pl/?p=12359 Peter Greenway’s latest film about the legend of world cinema, “Eisenstein in Guanajuato,” will have its premiere screening in Kazimierz Dolny. The audience will be personally invited to the presentation by Elmer Bäck, who plays the titular role.

A character and a director who cannot be ignored. There are at least two reasons why every film-lover should see EISENSTEIN IN GUANAJUATO. First, its a movie about the renowned Russian director, whose contribution to the development of cinema is invaluable. Second, the man responsible for this movie is Peter Greenway, one of the most distinctive and controversial filmmakers of recent years.

Elmer Bäck, who plays the role of Sergei Eisenstein, will be our guest at Two Riversides. In Kazimierz Dolny, the Finnish actor will talk about his role, and invite the audience gathered at the PGE Cinema Electric to the first Polish screening of the film (August 7th, 9:15 PM).

Cinema lessons at Two Riversides http://www.dwabrzegi.pl/en/cinema-lessons-at-two-riversides/ http://www.dwabrzegi.pl/en/cinema-lessons-at-two-riversides/#comments Fri, 24 Jul 2015 18:32:00 +0000 http://www.dwabrzegi.pl/?p=12277 Difficult periods of Polish history, the transition from documentary to feature, the journey towards the Oscars, and an inside look at the profession of a producer – these are the topics of this year’s “Cinema lesson.”

CINEMA LESSON – THE CONFESSIONS OF A FILMMAKER is a unique form of meeting between our special guests and the festival audience. The authors talk about their fascinations, artistic sins, and the secrets of their craft.

What topics from our history are most controversial? How do authors of different generations approach these difficult topics, and how do they communicate with their audiences through their works? Can controversial subject matter of a film cause strong social divisions in Poland? What is the power of film today? The participants of the KINO WOLNOŚĆ debate will attempt to answer these questions.

First he made documentary films that stirred all of Poland, then he directed a feature film that met with excellent reviews abroad. From “Such a Nice Boy I Gave Birth to” to “The Red Spider” – MARCIN KOSZAŁKA is going to share the secrets of his filmmaking trade at Two Riversides.

The other “Cinema lessons” will belong to producers. For the last 25 years, JERZY KAPUŚCIŃSKI has been a trailblazer in Polish cinema. What are the responsibilities of a producer? What does being a creative producer entail? All this will be explained by none other than Jerzy Kapuściński.

Poland’s biggest cinematic success, which is an Oscar for “Ida,” wouldn’t be possible without EWA PUSZCZYŃSKA. The Polish producer will talk about the journey that lead her to the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film, as well as her previous work as line producer, production assistant, executive producer, delegate producer, co-producer, production coordinator… and also simply producer. What distinguishes each of these roles? She will answer this question during her “Cinema lesson.”

“The Red Spider” thriller at Two Riversides http://www.dwabrzegi.pl/en/the-red-spider-thriller-at-two-riversides/ http://www.dwabrzegi.pl/en/the-red-spider-thriller-at-two-riversides/#comments Fri, 17 Jul 2015 11:30:42 +0000 http://dwabrzegi.pl/?p=11911 Serial killers intrigue filmmakers all over the world. At Two Riversides we’ll have the opportunity to see how Marcin Koszałka depicts a killer – his “The Red Spider” will be screened long before its cinematic premiere.

The story in “The Red Spider” is based on facts, and the protagonist, played by Filip Pławiak, is inspired by Karol Kot, a serial killer who was at large several decades ago in the capital of Lesser Poland.

The film has already been presented at the festival in Karlovy Vary, where it received favourable reviews. In foreign press, the Polish director has even been compared to Gus Van Sant (“Elephant”) and Michael Haneke (“Funny Games”).

Marcin Koszałka will also be a guest at Two Riversides and the screening will be followed by his “Cinema lesson.” During the meeting he will reveal how his latest film was made, and also tell about his background in documentary filmmaking (“Such a Nice Boy I Gave Birth to”) and cinematography (“Welts,” “The Reverse”). One of the main characters in “The Red Spider” is played by Adam Woronowicz, the hero of this year’s retrospective “And God created actor.”

“The Brand New Testament” to close Two Riversides http://www.dwabrzegi.pl/en/the-brand-new-testament-to-close-two-riversides/ http://www.dwabrzegi.pl/en/the-brand-new-testament-to-close-two-riversides/#comments Wed, 15 Jul 2015 21:10:19 +0000 http://dwabrzegi.pl/?p=11909 The myth of creation is going to be revised. The 9th edition of the Two Riversides festival will be concluded with “The Brand New Testament” by Jaco Van Dormael.

God living with a wife and daughter in Brussels? Only in the crazy reality of Jaco Van Dormael. In his latest film, the Belgian director tells the story of the divine family, where the Almighty differs considerably from the image created in the Bible. God is lazy, spends all day glued to the TV screen, and his leisure time is nagging on his wife and daughter. His life goal? To make people’s lives miserable.

Van Dormael’s revisionist satire was screened at the main competition in Cannes, where it met with favourable reviews by critics. Journalist approved of Van Dormael’s boldness with which he talks about Christianity in times of political correctness. His absurdist humour was compared to that presented years ago by the British group Monty Python.

Now Polish viewers will also be able to watch “The Brand New Testament” – the screening of Jaco Van Dormael’s film will accompany the closing gala of Two Riversides, which will take place on August 8th.
