DESCRIPTION

The story about a father and son, who in 1835 are searching for a runaway Gypsy slave in Wallachia, is something between “Papusza” and “The Saragossa Manuscript.” It is a historical road movie in a black-and-white form of a satirical tale. Stunning cinematography, with a lot of widescreen shots portraying the protagonists against a background of landscapes, are an original pastiche of the western and the epic film.

“Aferim!” pictures mainly the last period of European feudalism. Basing his research on a number of 19th century written sources, Jude makes an ambitious attempt to recreate the world view of the century. He brings out an entanglement of nationalism, xenophobia, religious intolerance and prejudice, clearly sympathising with the persecuted Gypsies.
