DESCRIPTION

Along with the Austrian filmmaker we pass by the evenly-cut hedges surrounding the estates of his compatriots, and go down to the cellars: the spaces of sinful pleasures, shameful perversions, and fantasies straight out of a horror movie. It's also a world of weaknesses and desires elsewhere unfulfilled. In his staged documentary (on which he worked for over 10 years), Seidl takes a close look at unappealing faces and bodies which are his tools for emotional provocation and moral reflection. He forces us to contemplate sexuality and the mutual discovery and abuse in relationships. “In the Basement” also raises a question about the reception of documentaries, as well as about the limits of sensitivity, tolerance, and the viewers' sense of humour.

2014 IFF in London – Grierson Award nomination

DIRECTOR
Ulrich Seidl (1952) Austrian documentary filmmaker and director of feature films. He uncompromisingly tests the limits of tolerance and the good taste of his viewers. A straight-faced satirist, man of scandal, and simultaneously a rebellious humanist who condemns the flaws and weaknesses of Austrians. Among his Polish viewers, the “Paradise” trilogy is most popular.
