An oneiric psychological drama. The protagonist, a student played by Jan Nowicki, abandons his current way of life and sets out in search of an alternative somewhere in Poland. He dreams of an affluent life: marrying a wealthy woman, having a villa and a good car. However, he meets a girl – a tram driver – who has different ideals. This makes him re-assess his frame of mind and the values he believes in. The protagonist faces a clash of two conflicting attitudes. Resignation and the readiness to conform to an existing formula for life, and youthful rebellion, the rejection of a boring life deprived of ideals and controlled only by acquiring wealth. Skolimowski included a series of visionary, metaphorical scenes in “Barrier,” bringing his work closer to an auteur film essay.
