A hypnotic psychological thriller about the heavy sins of the Chile Catholic Church. A small town by the seaside, where the Church keeps retired priests and those who need special “care,” is visited by a Jesuit priest who is in charge of terminating such places. He is a well-educated professional and psychotherapist. He begins a series of conversations, during which he shall find out more about the reasons for which the residents are locked here.
Larrain successfully makes the atmosphere heavy, countering it with soothing music by Arvo Pärt. He also poses a question about the sweeping of people's harm under the carpet, and the possibility of moral regeneration (both individual and collective). The latest film of the central figure of the 2011 Two Riversides retrospective strengthened his position as the new star of artistic cinema.
