DESCRIPTION

A grim submarine crew, a feared pack of forest bandits, a famous surgeon, and a battalion of child soldiers – “The Forbidden Room” has it all. Guy Maddin's latest work (co-directed with Evan Johnson) is another one of his film on films: a stylised collage full of erudition, deeply submerged in the history of silent film. The stories, accompanied only by music, emerge one from another like gigantic matryoshka dolls: you never know which level of narrative is the last one, or whether you're about to be taken to another dreamed-up reality. Maddin intertwines all the motifs, treating them more as a pretext: as attractive material supposedly “stolen” from silent films which have, in fact, never existed. “The Forbidden Room” is a crazy rollercoster of a tale for film buffs, in which the thin line between reality and the dreamworld is blurred from the very beginning.

DIRECTOR

Guy Maddin (1956) Canadian director with a very distinct, expressive style. Most of his projects are made against the background of fake decorations, on grainy 16 mm film. Maddin is a learned author and cinema-lover who obsessively evokes cinema of the 20s and 30s in his films (usually shorts).

Evan Johnson – He worked with and learned from Guy Maddin, whom he started cooperating with as one of the cameramen for “My Winnipeg.” In his feature-length debut, “The Foribidden Room,” he has also worked on the script, special effects, and editing.
