DESCRIPTION

Jerzy Skolimowski's debut is a combination of short student films made over the 4 years he spent at the Film School in Łódź. “Identification Marks: None” is the first instalment in the story about Andrzej Leszczyc, played by the director himself. Along with the film “Walkover” it constitutes a portrait of a sensitive, lost young man, depicted against a background of the grotesque socialist reality of 1960s' Poland. The first scene shows Andrzej waking up early and leaving his sleeping girlfriend to stand before the conscription committee. He demands to be immediately drafted into service, as he is certain that only the military can teach him what adult life is.

The film was made using modest means and introduced a new kind of realism into Polish cinema. By showing the protagonist wander freely and aimlessly through an inert world, Skolimowski reflects the inner state of the generation that was growing up during the little stabilisation period.
