The film takes place in the Turkish provinces. It's early summer, the school year has just ended. Lale and her four sisters are returning from school and engage in some innocent fun with the boys. It appears, however, that according to members of the local community the youngsters' behaviour is highly immoral. This causes a scandal that will bear far-reaching consequences. The girls are put under house arrest while the adults, in accord with local tradition, try to find them husbands that they are to wed even against their own will. The protagonists won't give up their youthful love of freedom easily, though.
“Mustang” is Deniz Gamze Ergüven's feature-length debut. Much like “A Drop of Water,” this film juxtaposes the need for independence with the conservative, oppressive customs of the Turkish interior.
