The play's author, Dorota Masłowska, juxtaposed two different ways of thinking and styles, creating thus a panorama of Polish society. “No Matter How Hard We Tried” is a tale about the times of transformation, one full of grotesque dialogue and mockery of advertising language, tabloids, and national stereotypes. The protagonists are three women who share a cramped studio flat in Warsaw: Miserable Granny (Danuta Szaflarska), her daughter Halina (Magdalena Kuta), and granddaughter – Little Metal Girl (Aleksandra Popławska). There are also their neighbours – Bożena, the leaftlet distributor (Maria Maj), and the director of the film “The Horse That Rode Horseback” (Adam Woronowicz). The play was staged in TR Warszawa theatre in Warsaw in 2009. The film adaptation, also directed by Grzegorz Jarzyna, has enjoyed much success as well, thereby establishing an example of how to translate nowadays theatre plays to the language of cinema.
