The life of Jerzy Popiełuszko can almost serve as a ready script for a thrilling movie. Priesthood, oppositional activity, political repression, a bold attitude towards the limitations on liberty imposed by the authorities of the People's Republic of Poland, and ultimately – abduction and death by the hands of his persecutors. All of these events from the life of Jerzy Popiełuszko are depicted by Rafał Wieczyński in his epic biographical film, which has a running time of two and a half hours. The titular role is played by Adam Woronowicz, who successfully combined Christian gentleness with the relentlessness of a staunch opposition activist – two dominating character traits of Fr. Popiełuszko. Simultaneously, Woronowicz did not create an unattainable figure. He took care to portray the priest in a warm, human way, not forgetting about his sense of humour. Wieczyński's film is set against a background of key events in Polish history in the 1970s and 1980s.
2009 Gold Ducks – nominated for Best Film and for Best Actor (Adam Woronowicz)
