DESCRIPTION
In 1943 on Rosenstrasse in Berlin there stood a building where a group of German Jews were being held. They were soon supposed to be transported to a death camp. They shared a peculiar status, however – most of them were husbands to German women of Aryan descent. The women fought for their men, organising non-violent protests by the prison. Von Trotta tells the story of these events through retrospection based on the recollections of one of the protest’s participants. The director attempts to draw an analogy between the situation of the heroines and the position of modern women. Nonetheless, “Rosenstrasse” is first and foremost a touching portrait of indomitable, brave, and loving wives.
