A regular day in Tehran. The congested traffic is spotted with yellow taxi cabs. One of them is driven by Jafar Panahi himself, known Iranian filmmaker. His clients include simple people and intellectuals, friends and perfect strangers, coincidental individuals in need and family members with an appointment for the ride. In the film, every passenger, watched by the camera installed inside, has their own thoughts on life in Iran. Giving voice to his compatriots, Panahi intertwines art with life, auteur cinema with ordinary everydayness. “Taxi” is an exceedingly amusing film, and simultaneously one that insightfully portrays Iranian society. Panahi forges his limitations (a political ban on filmmaking) into an asset, experimenting with form that borders between fiction and documentary.
